Britain is home to some absolutely stunning heritage sites, including 28 UNESCO world heritage sites. From the magnificently mysterious Stonehenge to the extravagant castles and stately homes, there is a plethora of national treasures for you to see right on your doorstep. So we've come up with 5 of the best heritage spots that are absolute must-sees.
1 Stonehenge
What's most interesting about this prehistoric monument is not what we know but what we don't know. The meaning and purpose of the Wiltshire-based monument is still unknown. Our ancestors may have used it as a temple for sun worship or even a burial ground. Let your imagination run wild with a visit to Stonehenge.
2 1066 Battle Abbey
Battle Abbey and Battlefield, located in Sussex, is the location where the 1066 Battle of Hastings (one of the most famous moments in our national history) took place. If you're interested in Britain's rich history then you'll certainly want to visit the site. It makes for a great learning experience too, with its enthralling visitor centre that features interactive displays.
3 Hadrian's Wall
A visit to Hadrian's Wall is an epic experience. The wall itself stretches a whopping 73 miles across Northern England. As a major frontier in the Roman empire there are several fascinating sites along the wall. This includes Roman garrison towns, as well as what's said to be the most complete Roman fort that can be seen in Britain.
4 Dover Castle
The setting for this castle is stunning, being seated on top of the white cliffs of Dover. Dover Castle has played a hugely significant role throughout British history and is around 20 centuries old. For example, it functioned at one time as a medieval fortress and also had a role to play in the Dunkirk evacuation during WWII.
5 Wrest Park
The secret garden at Wrest Park is currently being restored which is great news considering the gardens were pretty much inaccessible for decades. We'll finally be able to visit one of the biggest and most important secret gardens in the UK. There's already a lot to see with sections of the mansion and garden already having been restored.
